Cadillac Mountain is a must-see within Acadia National Park in Maine. At 1,527 feet, it's the highest peak on the East Coast. Reach the summit on a hike …
Judy, We are planning to go to Acadia national park in few weeks. I have a fear of height. Your review will be a big help to me. I have a few questions for you: Based on your experience, for the perspective of Fear Of Height, Do I need to worry about drive to Acadia national park? Driving inside the park (other than Cadillac Mountain)? Any other area i should be worry about? Your reply will help me to make better decision. Thank you for your support

Hello! I've got a pretty strong fear of heights and I had little to no issues with the park. I would even recommend Cadillac Mountain. The road is really well done and not super close to the edge, and you can go slowly if you need to. You don't have to get anywhere near the edge to enjoy the view. If at any time fear does start to creep up, just take a couple of careful steps back and give yourself time to reevaluate.
Other than sunrise and sunset, when is the best time of day to be at the top of Cadillac Mountain in June? Is it better to hike up or drive up? (we are comfortable with moderate hikes between 2-4 miles). Thanks!

Better to drive up, it's all uphill, and single lane (not much shoulder). Depending on temperatures, I would say anytime from 8 AM - 11 AM is best.
So we are looking at going next September. When can we book a vehicle pass, and how would we go about doing that.

Hello, Just Google 'Cadillac Mountain Reservation' and it will take you to the recreation.gov site where you can book your pass. Right now, I only see Oct as open. I would suggest you check back maybe next April/May to find out how far in advance you can reserve your pass. We reserved our pass for Labor Day Weekend approx 3 weeks in advance. There were plenty of passes available - but not at sunrise. Those seem to go fast. If you are aiming for sunset, which we did - then go up at least one hour (or more) before sunset - as it will take some time to drive, park and walk over to the other side for the best viewing of the sunset. If you find you have plenty of time, then you can explore the area near the main parking on top and look at the great views. Also, we saw a number of people who were having a picnic up there, which was a nice idea. Picnic, then watch the sunset. The only thing I'd mention is that on the West coast, it seems after sunset, you still have a good 45 minutes of visibility. On the East coast (or at least on the summit), I was surprised that the sun set, and within 15 minutes or so, it was too dark to see anything. So keep that in mind as well. Another thing to note: If you can't find the time you want for the day you want, the park releases approx 20 passes for all times at 10am 2 days before. But you need to be ready and quick to get "prime time" for those slots.
How long was your visit to Cadillac Mountain by driving up? How long did you stay?

Driving up if you don't stop is really quick--less than 10 minutes. But there are viewpoints along the way that you may want to stop at. We went during the day (not for sunrise or sunset) and spent about an hour walking the trails on the mountain. From the top you can see Bar Harbor and Bar Island and the Porcupine Islands as well as Schoodic Peninsula and the Cranberry Islands. There are signboards that tell you what you are looking at. The mountain is almost bare of vegetation which is something to see. This is more common farther north. My husband and I have visited Acadia probably about 25 times and Cadillac Mountain is our favorite! Enjoy!
The rec.gov website says one reservation per vehicle, but they don't ask for any vehicle information. Do you have to provide that info when you check in? I want to make a 2nd reservation because it looks like solid cloud cover the morning of our reservation. Thanks!

Sorry, can't help. We went in early May off season and didn't need to make reservations.
