The auto trail is open year-round as long as conditions don't change. I have seen mention of painted buntings visiting the bird feeders near the visitor center of Santee NWR, but the timing of migration may affect their presence/absence from the refuge. You might want to call the visitor center (803-478-2217) to ask if any have been sighted recently. The visitor center is staffed by volunteers, so if you don't reach anyone, try again. It is closed all day Monday during every week.
