You can ride all day with your ticket. There and back, and again - that way you can ride different engines if you so desire. You can stay on but you’d miss the museum, church, signal tower, station tea room, park, miniature engines and the Princess shed and the rolling stock. It’s a go for the day place. But if you did just want to stay on and do the round trip without getting off probably an hour.

Trains depart from the Butterley Station which is on the B6179 just outside Ripley. The site has free parking. The train travels through a long scenic cutting before arriving at the Swanwick Junction site. At this site there are two museums, a children's play area, a light railway, signal boxes and a buffet serving snacks and hot food. The site hosts many volunteer groups who renovate historic vintage, diesel and steam engines, so expect to see anything from pristine engines to those needing time and a little patience to restore. For the energetic there is a country park of about 40 acres through which you can walk and explore. The track is 3.5 miles and passes a reservoir, gladed cuttings on route to this island of industrial heritage.
