Anthony Mackie caught backlash after downplaying the "America" aspect of his character, Captain America.

This is no picnic for the actors involved, as fans can be protective of their favorite heroes and reluctant to embrace new players. Recently, Anthony Mackie spoke out about his — and, by extension, Sam Wilson’s — take on Captain America, which caused something of a fandom uproar. His comments, however, only prove that he understands his character.

Following on from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Brave New World shows that Mackie's Sam Wilson has accepted the moniker of Captain America. Like his predecessor Steve Rogers, Sam has a strained relationship with those in power.

Captain America represents a lot of different things, and I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those,” Mackie said Tuesday, prompting backlash.

Some Marvel fans are a tad upset at the latest actor to play superhero Captain America. Previously portrayed by Chris Evans, the role has now been given to Anthony Mackie, who up till now had played “The Falcon” in the various Marvel movies.

The bust-up began after Anthony Mackie described the eponymous protagonist as a man with ‘honor, dignity and integrity’ and that such qualities did not currently represent America
