To use a lectern in Minecraft, put it in your hot bar and right-click on any ground block to put it down. Then you can put a book on it by right-clicking the lectern with a book in your hand.

In Java Edition, they will contain 100 pages ... Redstone signal is emitted by the lectern (Image via Minecraft 1.19) These are special books that can be placed on a lectern.
