British Airways passengers suffered delays following a systems outage at the airline’s main operations center in Heathrow that prevented communication with aircraft across the region.

British Airways flights have been grounded in an IT outage, according to reports.Passengers wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that they were held on planes that were unable to depart. Others said they faced problems with the airline’s website.

British Airways has been hit by an IT outage which is reportedly causing huge queues at Heathrow. The airline’s website appeared to have gone down shortly after 6pm when problem reports surged on Downdetector.

The flag carrier, owned by British-Spanish multinational airline holding IAG, later said the problem had been fixed much more speedily than in the past because of millions more being spent on extra investment in IT.

The airline last suffered a major outage last year, with more than 175 flights canceled. In December 2022 a large number of long-haul flights were impacted by a different outage. Short-haul flights were grounded earlier that year, during a lengthy and disruptive outage in February.

British Airways is reportedly experiencing a "global outage" to its IT systems this evening (November 18), with planes grounded and pilots left "in the dark".
