Joe Chow – previously deputy commissioner of police (operations) – has been appointed as Commissioner of Police by China’s State Council. It comes after Raymond Siu stepped down as the city’s top cop on Tuesday.

Beijing has named Joe Chow Yat-ming as the new Hong Kong police commissioner, succeeding Raymond Siu Chak-yee, whose term ended on Tuesday. Chow’s appointment was approved by the State Council on Wednesday following a recommendation by Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu,

The United States of America has imposed sanctions on Hong Kong’s Police Commissioner, Raymond Siu Chak-yee and five other officials. They were sanctioned for human rights reasons. The sanctions on the police commissioner and the others means any financial transactions with them in the US are now criminalised and any interests they hold in America
