NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee basketball continues its conference slate by taking on Vanderbilt at Memorial Gymnasium. The No. 6 Vols (16-1, 3-1 SEC) enter off a win against Georgia on Wednesday, while the Commodores (14-3, 2-2) beat South Carolina at West End last time out.
In the span of less than 24 hours, Vandy’s men and women produced thrilling one-point victories over ranked Tennessee teams at Memorial Gymnasium. The back-to-back nailbiters marked the first time the Commodores had swept their archrivals at home since 2014.
It was another example of Tennessee’s inconsistency in moments that counted. Instead of facing a one-point deficit, Vanderbilt’s lead quickly ballooned to 13, making a comeback effort that much harder. “It happens to all of us sometimes,” Barnes said. “Our guys fought back, kept grinding but didn’t have enough at the end to get it done.”
Vandy will get another opportunity to slow down a high-octane offense against the Wildcats, who are averaging 89.2 points per game, second in the nation behind Alabama. Kentucky ranks first in the SEC in field goals made per game (31.2), three-point baskets per game (10.2) and assists per game (18.7).
