"The Department is deeply disappointed that Jewish students studying on elite U.S. campuses continue to fear for their safety amid the relentless antisemitic eruptions that have severely disrupted campus life for more than a year.

The Trump administration’s Education Department announced Monday that it’s investigating 60 universities – including Portland State – for allegedly failing to protect students from discrimination against Jewish students.

Columbia University had $400 million in federal grants canceled after the Trump administration said the school failed to protect Jewish students.

The letter also coincides with the detention of Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and leader of Columbia University's encampment movement last year.

In a letter sent on Monday, the federal department said schools could face "potential enforcement action" if they do not protect Jewish students.
