Rep. Debbie Mayfield filed a lawsuit Thursday over state election officials blocking her from running in a special election to fill a Senate seat.

State Rep. Debbie Mayfield has asked the Florida Supreme Court to intervene after the Florida Department of State disqualified her in a Special Election in Senate District 19. The Melbourne Republican stressed urgency in a court petition, as a Republican Primary will be held on April 1.

Brevard County Republican Rep. Debbie Mayfield wants the state’s highest court to force the Florida Department of State to include her on the ballot for the special election for the state Senate seat she held for eight years.

Four candidates qualified to run for the Florida House District 32 seat, which Debbie Mayfield plans to resign from to run for her old Senate seat.

At issue is interpretation of term limit rules and whether Mayfield could run for her former Senate seat. Four other candidates qualify.

House Republican Rep. Debbie Mayfield, who had filed to run in the special election scheduled for the state Senate seat she held for eight years before being term-limited out of office last year, has been informed by the Florida Department of State that she has been disqualified for the race.
