Senate Democrats on Monday blocked a GOP-led bill that would ban transgender athletes from women’s and girls’ sports at federally funded schools and educational institutions.

Senate Democrats defeated the so-called Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, a Republican bill that would have banned transgender female athletes from girls’ and women’s sports. The Senate bill failed in a 51-45 party-line vote, with four senators not voting.

The Senate has rejected legislation aiming to bar transgender women and girls from participating in school athletic competitions designated for female athletes.
