Robert Saleh’s encore as 49ers defensive coordinator took on more likelihood as the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Las Vegas Raiders hired others to fill their head coach vacancies.

Robert Saleh is set to take one of his former jobs, as he will become the San Francisco 49ers' defensive coordinator, The Athletic reported on Thursday.

Robert Saleh left the Jacksonville Jaguars years ago to become the 49ers defensive coordinator. It appears he's returning to that job in the Bay Area.

The San Francisco 49ers essentially banked their defensive coordinator search on a reunion with Robert Saleh and after days of uncertainty they weathered the storm and got their guy.

Saleh was previously the 49ers defensive coordinator from 2017–20 until taking the head coaching job with the New York Jets.

Just two seasons after the 49ers were ninth-worst in the NFL in yards allowed per game (351.6), they ranked second (281.8) in the same category as they won the NFC crown. Saleh parlayed his defensive prowess into the Jets head coaching job in 2021, but the same success did not follow.

Robert Saleh is viewed as the favorite to be the next Jaguars head coach, as he landed in Jacksonville for an interview.

Saleh is anticipated to take on a head coaching style role but on defense. With that in mind, he is putting together his coaching staff in San Francisco. As he brings in his own assistant coaches, the 49ers are forced to say goodbye to part of their current staff.

A coach was juggling offers. A team didn’t want to run afoul of the NFL’s Rooney Rule. An expected result took some unexpected turns as they reached a deal.
