A wave of fraudulent text messages targeting drivers with claims of unpaid E-ZPass tolls has prompted warnings from authorities across the United States. Known as a "smishing" scam, the messages appear to come from official tolling agencies, directing recipients to settle unpaid tolls and urging drivers to avoid late fees by paying quickly.

A Central New York woman is sharing her story after falling victim to the E-ZPass scam NewsChannel 9 reported on earlier this week. The Mexico, New York woman said she didn’t know it was a scam until she saw NewsChannel 9’s newscast.
