Data by the United States Geological Survey has produced a horrifying map which shows the extent of an earthquake in Myanmar - and just how far away it has caused destruction

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake rattled much of Southeast Asia on Friday, flattening skyscrapers and leaving more than 1,000 people dead from Myanmar to Thailand.

A major 7.7 magnitude earthquake has struck Myanmar, causing damage and casualties across the country and in neighbouring Thailand. The quake happened in central Myanmar at a depth of 6.2 miles just before 1pm local time (6:20 GMT),

The U.S. Geological Service's predictive modelling estimated Myanmar's death toll could eventually top 10,000 and losses could exceed the country's annual economic output.

An aftershock yesterday struck Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, near the epicenter of the initial quake, toppling several buildings that had previously survived. Many fear for the missing, whose chances drop sharply after this evening, when a crucial 72-hour survival window closes.

A rescue team in Mandalay, the city closest to the earthquake's epicentre, tells the BBC they "are digging people out with our bare hands".

A powerful earthquake killed more than 140 people in Myanmar on Friday, authorities said, toppling buildings and wrecking infrastructure across a wide area, including a skyscraper under construction in neighbouring Thailand.

Myanmar is one of the most prone areas to earthquakes in the world as it features among the high-risk regions on the Global Seismic Risk Map. Notably, Sagaing Fault is an important earthquake-prone fault in Myanmar.

Damage is reported in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city (which lies 600km away from the epicentre) and in Naypyidaw, the country’s capital. The control tower of that city’s airport has collapsed, according to Mary Callahan of the University of Washington.
