NASA rover captures images of mysterious "mother-of-pearl" clouds above Mars
New images captured by NASA's Curiosity rover show colorful clouds in the sky over Mars. The images were captured by the rover's Mastcam, which NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory compared to the rover's eyes. The clouds were spotted on Jan. 17, and the photos were taken over the course of 16 minutes, the space agency said in a news release.

Researchers report that a great time to see these clouds from Gale Crater, where Curiosity is located, is the early Autumn. Videos from the rover’s MastCam show the clouds changing colors as the night fell.

Taken over 16 minutes on January 17 the images show noctilucent or twilight clouds tinged with colour. This video has been sped up about 480 times. The white plumes falling out of the clouds are carbon dioxide ice that would evaporate closer to the Martian surface.
