WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Wednesday demanded an apology from the Episcopal bishop of Washington after she made a direct appeal to him during a prayer service marking his inauguration to have mercy on the LGBTQ+ community and migrant workers who are in the United States illegally.

In a prayer service on Tuesday for the new president at the National Cathedral, the Episcopal bishop of the Diocese of Washington, D.C., took the opportunity to ask President Donald Trump for mercy for immigrants and the LGBTQ community. The reactions have been stark, and mixed.

Right Rev. Mariann Budde, the spiritual leader of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, has voiced concern about Trump’s language and conduct for years.

President Donald Trump attended the inaugural prayer service Tuesday at Washington National Cathedral, where a sermon on unity called out the president to "have mercy on the people in our country who are scared.

Mariann Budde, 65, is the Episcopalian bishop who confronted Trump during the National Prayer Service. Trump and Vice President JD Vance were in attendance as part of their first full day in the Oval Office.
