California universities can no longer favor the children of alumni in the admissions process starting next year. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill banning so-called legacy admissions on Monday at all private colleges and universities in the state. Legacies were already banned at public schools.

Private, nonprofit colleges in California will be banned from giving preference in the admissions process to applicants related to alumni or donors of the school under a new law signed by Gov.

California just became the fifth state to ban legacy admissions—and only the second to ban them at private schools in particular. Those happen to be some of the most selective and sought-after schools in the country, like Stanford and the University of Southern California—and Santa Clara University, the alma mater of Gov. Gavin Newsom.
