Most West Virginia public schools were back in session Friday after being closed off-and-on since winter break, but it might not last.

Most of West Virginia will get additional snow before the weekend on top of the 6-12 inches the central part of the state has already seen since Sunday.

More snow is in the forecast for north central West Virginia. After near nonstop winter weather throughout the month of January so far, it’s not slowing down yet. According to the National Weather Service,

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, 5.5 inches of snow fell on Jan. 5, 2025, which was covered in a coating of about 1/4 inch of ice, thanks to a freezing rain late in the day. More snow and freezing rain is likely from Winter Storm Blair before 2 p.

Snow does more than bring water to the ground. According to the West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA), as snow falls through the atmosphere, nitrogen attaches to it, and then when the snow melts, it slowly releases it into the soil, providing a natural fertilizer.

West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle counties are under a Winter Weather Advisory and Hazardous Weather Outlook. Eastern Panhandle counties could get 5-9 inches of snow with one-tenth of an inch of ice.

In addition to the Winter Storm Warning for Somerset County, the NWS has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Cambria, Clearfield, Elk, McKean and Warren counties. T
