Function Structure Diagram | New Product Design
A Function Structure Diagrams (FSD) is a graphical representation of the functions a product performs on its inputs and outputs. In a FSD, the overall function is broken down into elemental or atomic sub-functions. Each sub-funtion can not be broken down further and is solution neutral.
Functional Analysis – Introduction to Mechanical Design and …
A function structure is an abstract model of the new product, without material features such as shape, dimensions and materials of the parts. It describes the functions of the product and its parts and indicates the mutual relations.
Functional Analysis as the systematic process of identifying, describing, and relating the functions a system has to be able to perform, in order to be successful, but does not consider it as a design tool to address how functions will be performed, i.e. to map functions to physical components.
Morphological Analysis | New Product Design - npdbook.com
In order to apply morphological analysis to product design, we simply identify the critical functions in our function structure diagram and then identify many different solutions for each function. The results of this research are compiled and presented in morphological chart.
♦ Describe, and illustrate with examples, two tools of functional analysis - Functional Flow Block Diagrams and Time Line Analysis. ♦ Functional analysis is the systematic process of identifying, describing, and relating the functions a system must perform in order to to be successful. It does not address how these functions will be performed.
Leture 8 establishing functional structures | PPT - SlideShare
May 14, 2018 · The document discusses establishing functional structures through function analysis for engineering design. It defines functions as the purposive actions a product is meant to perform. The key steps are: 1) Expressing the overall function in terms of inputs and outputs. 2) Breaking this down into essential sub-functions.

It is this latter “formal structure” of the parts and their place in a hierarchy of wholes that participants in design work to define (in full, i.e., all relevant parameters specified), given the stated functional requirements of the parts of the whole.

Chapter 2: Functional Analysis and Concept Generation
Idea generation is accomplished by creating single systems from different mechanisms illustrated in the morphological chart. It is advised to generate several feasible designs using different mechanisms for each function for each concept.
