The first two years of a US PhD, the masters part, is condensed into one year in the UK. If you want to compare like with like, then a UK MA+PhD = 4 years (usually).

Not all that strange. *Theoretically* a full-time PhD is supposed to take 3 years from start to finish, but in practice it usually takes 4. 6 years is uncommon, but it's not totally unheard of.
