Triangle Homes for African American families was constructed 1940-1941 by W. J. McGee and Son for a base bid of $325,866. Two-story row houses are still in use in the triangle formed by South Maple Street and South 4th Avenue.

Laurel, Mississippi, exemplifies the new southern development that occurred in the years following Reconstruction. Coinciding with continental rail building and the depletion of northern timber resources, Laurel emerged as one of Mississippi's great industrial centers.

Located in the southeast region of Mississippi known as the Pine Belt, the city of Laurel was established in 1882. It flourished during the growth of the timber industry just over a century ago. In 1893, a decade after the railroad opened the region for large-scale timber production, Eastman-Gardiner & Company opened the first giant lumber mill.
