The age at which a cow moose breeds is related to her growth rate and body size, which are determined by region, weather, and level of nutrition . Females generally first breed when they are 28 months old but occasionally breed at 16 months old.

The interspecific relationship between moose and cattle is not unheard of. There are actually many documented instances of moose courting cattle and in at least once instance a bull moose tried to mount a dairy cow. (The Globe and Mail September 22, 1986)

The moose is polygynous, i.e., one male mating with several females, successively. Home ranges vary with many factors, but average 20.7-38.8 km 2 (8-15 sq mi). Cows with calves remain isolated from one another, and some may defend territories.

Cow moose commonly breed for the first time at 2 1/2 years of age. The cow usually has a single calf or twins, which remain with her for a full year. Moose can live for more than 20 years, but are in their prime at 6 to 9 years of age.

A cow's nutritional condition, or body weight, determines the number of calves born and when a cow first breeds. Moose continue to breed into their teens but may be less productive. Calves remain with their mother for one year and are driven off shortly before the next calf is born.

The breeding season for moose begins in late September and last into early October. Cows may produce their first calf when they are two, and most produce a calf by age 3. Each May, cows give birth to 1 to 2 calves. Cows rarely have more than 2 calves and young cows rarely have twins.

A female moose, or “cow,” typically breeds at about 28 months, although breeding has been known to occur as early as 16 months. After a gestation period of about 230 days, cows give birth to calves in the spring.
