The mission of 1SFC (A) is to organize, equip, train, and validate forces to conduct full-spectrum special operations in support of United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), Geographic Combatant Commanders, American ambassadors, and other governmental agencies.

The United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM or SOCOM) is the unified combatant command charged with overseeing the various special operations component commands of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force of the United States Armed Forces.

Formally activated on 1 October 1983, 1st SOCOM was the first headquarters to exercise both administrative and operational control of the full spectrum of ARSOF units. Within weeks of activation, 1st SOCOM was at war in the Caribbean Island of Grenada, supporting Operation URGENT FURY.
