May 1, 2019 · I have a couple of .458's. The first one was a SOTA arms upper, pinned to an Anderson lower. I started out with gun show 305 Gr ready made's, at about 1350 FPS. ~ 2" @ 100 Yds, reasonable (less than my 45-70) recoil and muzzle blast.

Dec 22, 2022 · Regarding 45 caliber alternatives, indeed 450 Bushmaster gets heavier subsonics at 400gr, and supersonics at equal or greater speed, all in the big bore mini length (ie AR-15). But unless something boxed me into 450 BM (ie straight wall hunting regs, availability, compatibility, or other) I would prefer 458 Socom as the larger bore super/sub round.

Dec 27, 2022 · 458 SOCOM - gives you energy and penetration. Trajectory and range are compromised, but lighter bullets aren't horrible, and their weight is close to a heavy 308 450 Bushmaster - Edge on velocity with light bullets, edge on availability. Loses more energy at range than 308 or 458 SOCOM 6.5 Grendel - Velocity and trajectory close to a 308.

Nov 11, 2023 · I have seen the 350 legend much talked about in the past. It seemed like everyone had to have an AR chambered in this caliber. I myself have too many others to use in straight walled.. You have options like the 357. 44 mag. 45/70, 450 , 458 SOCOM and more. They all will take a deer down .

Mar 27, 2010 · The 458 SOCOM is a niche cartridge designed for close-combat knockdown power. That it provides 45-70 energy for the AR-15 is it's reason for being and it's appeal to owners of those weapons. It is ideal for the handloader.

Jun 6, 2020 · Well, I've been a proponent of the .45 large family, (45-70, 45-90, 45-100, 45-3 1/2) for a long time. I built a 458 SOCOM AR. Really heavy bullets, 525-600 grain, reduce the powder capacity of the little necked down case too much and don't feed as well as I would like.

Oct 13, 2024 · Being that this is going to be something I want to hunt with as much as shoot for fun, this seems to be the best bang for the buck. It’s popular, so ammo is widespread. 458 Socom was appealing, but I haven’t seen ammo in years. Besides that, the BM is a straight wall (obviously), so I can hunt the southern MN shotgun zone, if I want to.
