Mortal Angron wouldn´t have fallen for Sanguinius gambit. Only Daemon Angron, who is beyond caring about and perceiving his opponents, could fall for that.

All of Angron's slave gladiators would've died to the nails soon after being saved anyways, and even if the Emperor liberated Nuceria it wouldn't change the fact that he is the type of tyrannical despot that Angron despises. When the Emperor saw what Angron was like, he probably realized that siding with him wouldn't have helped him.
