The burbot (Lota lota), also known as bubbot, [2] mariah, [3] loche, cusk, [4] freshwater cod, [5] freshwater ling, freshwater cusk, the lawyer, coney-fish, lingcod, [6] or eelpout, is a species of coldwater ray-finned fish native to the subarctic regions of the Northern hemisphere.

The bowfin skull is made up of 28 fused bones, which compose the dermatocranium. The roof of the mouth is made up of three bones, the ectopterygoid, the palantine, and the vomer. They have two sets of teeth, including one set of larger sharp teeth coming out of the mandibular and premaxillary bones to grasp and control the prey.

Otoliths were used for age estimation since the small cycloid scales of Burbot lack identifiable markings. A sagittal otolith extraction method developed by Bailey (1972) was used. Through a median incision into the skull, two transect cuts were made, one at the base of the skull, and one directly behind the eyes.

Burbot look like a cross between an American eel and a brown bullhead. A layer of tiny scales covers a thick, slimy skin. Mottled coloration in shades of yellows and browns resembles the markings of a wild cat and serves the same purpose.
