Early 172s were similar in appearance to the 170s, with the same straight aft fuselage and tall landing gear legs, although the 172 had a straight tailfin while the 170 had a rounded fin and rudder. In 1960, the 172A incorporated revised landing gear and the swept-back tailfin, which is still in use today.

Feb 6, 2011 · Which style Cessna 172 tail looks better to you? Cessna 172, C172, C-172, Cessna Skyhawk fan. From a functional standpoint the straight tail is superior. The swept tail offers exactly zero aerodynamic advantage in an airplane of this class, and has some disadvantages (e.g., reduced rudder authority, unnecessarily takes up hangar space).
Tail data was obtained for a model 177, as 172 data was not available. In this case the 177 has a slightly smaller tail, but the general design features should be equivalent to the 172.

Sep 12, 2013 · Hello, It has been my experience that the 1956 - 1959 Cessna 172 straight tails (especially the 57 model) take less ground roll (as much as 400 feet) than the early 60's models when they first introduced the swept tail. All have the 0300 engines.
