The GE C40-8W is a 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by GE Transportation Systems from 1989 to 1994. Often referred to as the Dash light series , it is part of the GE Dash 8 Series of freight locomotives.

Does anyone know what is the purpmse of the pipe chained to the walkway stanchions? Wearing the updated UP livery complete with nose wings is a UP C40-8W stored in the Englewood Yard dead line. The stack has been covered with a metal plate but the cab window is open.

With the C40-8 series, GE uprated all of its road-switchers to an even 4,000 horsepower. As the company continued pushing the envelope on its 7FDL prime mover, late era C40-8's were uprated to over 4,100 horsepower, and finally 4,400 horsepower.

The C40-8 has a traditional narrow short hood, but otherwise its external appearance is almost the same as that of the later Dash 8-40CW model. The most important customer for this model was UP, which ordered 257 of them.
