
EMD SD40-2 - Wikipedia
The EMD SD40-2 is a 3,000-horsepower (2,200 kW) C-C diesel–electric locomotive built by EMD from 1972 to 1989. The SD40-2 was introduced in January 1972 as part of EMD's Dash 2 series, competing against the GE U30C.

However, it was not affected by changes specific to the standard cab, such as the side panel around the windows, cab sub-base, battery box covers or the length of the short hood.

5 days ago · The SD38-2, SD40-2 and SD45-2 were introduced in 1972 as replacements for the SD38, SD40 and SD45 respectively. They retained the same respective horsepower ratings but received a host of mechanical and electrical upgrades, with the most visible difference being the longer frame with HT-C trucks.

In early November, locomotives scrapped at the Woodcrest Shop included: CN SD40-2 5370, IC SD40AR 6008, IC SD40-2 6030 (w/o DB), and IC SD40-2 6117. At month end all the remaining retired IC 6100-series, including ones stored in Memphis, had been moved to Woodcrest for the CN auction sale.

The main difference between rebuilt SD40 and genuine SD40-2 is that the latter use a longer frame and has longer front and rear porches, while the rebuilt SD40 have a shorter frame. A common product of rebuilding SD40s, and sometimes SD40-2s, is an SD40-3 .
