The EMD F3 is a 1,500-horsepower (1,100 kW) B-B freight- and passenger-hauling carbody diesel locomotive produced between July 1945 and February 1949 by General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division. Final assembly was at GM-EMD's La Grange, Illinois plant.

These F units were repainted into the CNJ orange and blue scheme as a tribute to the heritage of the line here at Jim Thorpe. CNJ F3A units 56 & 57 bring an excursion train out of the Jim Thorpe station. You can see how wide the CNJ ROW was.

The F3's pulled freight, freight and more freight on the CNJ. In fact, these diesels used in MU consists gave the CNJ the ability to pull complete, loaded anthracite coal trains eastbound out of Ashley, PA using the "back track" to reach the top of Ponobscot mountain.

May 23, 2019 · After the CNJ took delivery of the F3’s the Planes were rendered obsolete. The great pulling power of the diesels made it possible to get the loaded coal cars up “From the valley of anthracite” by conventional railroading.

Jan 8, 2025 · The CNJ 'Green' F-3s (10-A's + 5 B's) were road freight locomotives. With this said, they may have pulled passenger cars as anything can happen on the railroad, but I have never seen a photo or heard a documented fact that they ever did during their service as CNJ locomotives. MTH did green w/yellow stripes. Williams did green w/yellow stripes

While not originally from the CNJ, the ARHS and Tri State Chapter NRHS has done a good job at restoring these two F3As back to the CNJ tangerine and blue paint scheme. The Antracite Railway Historical Society and the Tri State Railway Historical Society have restored these two ex-BAR F-units to CNJ tangerine and blue livery.
