Dec 28, 2015 · "Big Hook" was the term railroaders used for their big crane that they would use to clean up wrecks and do construction work. Over the years, it got bigger. The irony is that they have scrapped their "big hooks" because side-booms are now used to clean up wrecks.

Chicago & North Western 6363 is a diesel-powered crane, known as a “wrecker,” designed for heavy-lift applications. Cranes like this are known as wreckers because they were often used for lifting locomotives and cars that had derailed in a wreck.

Chicago and North Western Railway - Wikipedia
The Chicago and North Western (reporting mark CNW) was a Class I railroad in the Midwestern United States. It was also known as the "North Western". The railroad operated more than 5,000 miles (8,000 km) of track at the turn of the 20th century, and over 12,000 miles (19,000 km) of track in seven states before retrenchment in the late 1970s.

6 days ago · Here's a shot of four locomotive cranes at CNW's Proviso Yard removing #19 and #20 mains after being cut up into 220' long track panels in the summer of '87 and loading onto flatcars. A new addition to the south side of the diesel ramp forced the mains to be realigned.
