Its Proviso Freight Yard, located 12 miles (19 km) west of the city center in suburban Cook County, was constructed between 1926 and 1929 and remained the largest such in the world, with 224 miles of trackage and a capacity of more than 20,000 cars.

Proviso Freight Transfer House Proviso, IL 2398 views The freight House had a capacity of 700 cars. When the freight house was built, it was the largest LCL freight transfer facility in the world. The freight house was dismantled in 1958. C&NW Historical Society Archives collection.

The yard takes its name from the township, which is named after the Wilmot Proviso, which forbad slavery in any territory taken from Mexico during the Mexican War. Some union employees have been heard to say working conditions in the yard violated that provision in this territory.

Later, in 1929 it opened the massive Proviso Yard located in western Chicago which at the time was largest terminal of its type in the country. The Great Depression, which hit the nation hard following the October 29, 1929 stock market crash was extremely taxing on the C&NW.
