Maati-kore or more commonly spelled Maticoor, also known as dig-dutty in West Indian culture is the night before or two nights before the wedding. Many people call it the Haldi ceremony. This is one of the first nights that follow rituals and offerings to the Hindu gods and goddesses.

Matikor/ Dig Dutty is a Hindu premarital ritual widely practiced in the Indian diaspora in the Caribbean, in places such as Guyana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Trinidad, and Suriname. This chapter focuses on Dig Dutty/Matikor in Guyana and Trinidad.

The matikore or dig dutty as it is popularly called in Guyana is essentially prayers to Mother Earth or Dharti puja and is done two days prior to the wedding. ‘Matti’ means earth and ‘kor’ means digging. The same rites are done separately at the homes of the bride and groom.
