The Empty Can Test, also known as the Jobe or Supraspinatus test, is used to assess for lesions of the rotator cuff, specifically the supraspinatus muscle and supraspinatus tendon. [1] Here is a video demonstrating the Empty Can Test: [2]

Purpose: Aid in diagnosing rotator cuff tears or subacromial impingement. Test Position: Sitting or standing. Performing the Test: The examiner passively elevates the patient’s shoulder to 90 degrees of abduction with internal rotation. The examiner then applies a downward pressure against the arm.
