The Kantō Plain (Japanese: 関東平野, Hepburn: Kantō heiya), in the Kantō region of central Honshu, is the largest plain in Japan. The surface geology of the Kantō Plain is the Quaternary alluvium and diluvium. The low mountain vegetation at an altitude of about 500 to 900 m in and around the plain is an evergreen broad-leaved forest zone.

The Kanto Plain, the largest plain in Japan, was created by the accumulation of more than 3000 meters of mud and sand that began to build up 20 million years ago. In the plain, there are lowlands along the rivers and higher plateaus.

Over the course of the next several centuries, the sea level fell, and the Kanto Plain rose from the ocean as a large tableland of flat terrain. The tableland was raised up higher, and a terrace was formed due to the “Kanto loam,” a layer of volcanic ash composing part of its sediment.

It is the largest plain in Japan and was, when it was fully developed in the Edo period, the richest agricultural area. During the Edo period when agriculture was the strongest part of the economy, this gave the rulers of the Kanto Plain far more wealth and power than any other feudal lords.
