The SCAR is manufactured in two main versions; the SCAR-L ("Light") and SCAR-H ("Heavy"). The SCAR-L fires 5.56×45mm NATO rounds from STANAG ( M16 ) magazines. The SCAR-H fires the more powerful 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge from proprietary 20-round magazines.

The MK 16 Mod 0 SCAR-L is a relatively new 5.56mm x 45mm carbine / assault rifle that has been selected by SOCOM to replace a number of existing weapons such as the M4A1 and the CQBR. The MK 16 can be configured with a 14 inch barrel (standard), with a 10 inch barrel (CQC) or with a 18 inch barrel (LB).

The FN SCAR 16S is light, easy to handle and quick shooting. It is chambered in the 5.56x45mm caliber. Unique to the FN SCAR 16S is the cold hammer-forged MIL-SPEC, free-floating barrel with chrome-lined bore and chamber.
