Isle of Man Prison is a mixed-use prison located in the Jurby parish of the Isle of Man. The prison is operated by the Isle of Man Prison Service (part of the Department of Home Affairs) and is the only functioning prison on the island.

The city expressed a desire to open a jail for men on Rikers Island as early as 1925, in order to replace their overburdened and dilapidated jail on Welfare Island, now Roosevelt Island. The jail was opened in 1932.

Kathy Hochul signed the Less is More Act into law, which prevents people from being sent to jail while they await hearings over alleged technical parole violations, to help alleviate some of the crowding in the city’s prison system but the law will not go into full effect until next September.

A new inspection shows Isle of Man Prison has made encouraging progress, but one major issue still looms large over the facility. The facility in Jurby was recently re-visited by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons to check in on progress made since an inspection in 2023 which identified a number of shortcomings.

At the time of this visit, there were 132 prisoners, 10 of whom were women held on the separate D wing. This represented a 50% increase in the prison population since our full inspection, in March 2023.
