In 2003, I purchased a used 1999 Mercedes SLK 230 with 60K miles from a dealer who proclaimed the car was a cherry. I liked the fact that it was a 4 cylinder (better gas mileage), supercharged (more power) and had always liked a convertable, but did not like the noise and wind from a rag top. According to 2005 SLK sales brochure the 420 Entertainment pkg contains 'integrated 6-disc CD changer, mounted inglovebox' and lists for $1,600. However, the current info for the 2006 SLK 280 on the MB website does not list the changer in the pkg, and additionally lists for $1,700.

Or if not that alternative, then a more modern car that is more tolerant of occasional use---early versions of the Boxster and SLK are getting pretty cheap, same price range as a 560SL or less. Or a BMW 3 series convertible. For some reason, Benzes and Porsches really hate to be abandoned for months at a time.

The Crossfire shares the same 215hp engine with the MB SLK320. I looked at a past review of the SLK and it said that the SLK320 arrived at 60mph in 6.5 seconds. If that is so, the Crossfire might achieve a 0-60 time of 6 or less because it weighs less than the SLK.

Between the Boxster and SLK, I think the Boxster is clearly the better performing true sports car. But, as spiritinthesky indicated, if it's going to be fitted with an automatic, I think the SLK might be worth consideration, as well. There was an SLK reviewer a couple years back who also was complaining about the lack of functionality with his iPod. However, he figured out (or someone from MB pointed it out to him) how to manipulate the iPod and select songs via the steering wheel controls.
