North Pacific Intermediate Water - Wikipedia
North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) is cold, moderately low salinity water mass that originates in the mixed water region (MWR) between the Kuroshio and Oyashio waters just east of Japan. Examination of NPIW at stations just east of the MWR indicates that the mixed waters in the MWR are the origin of the newest NPIW.
The pathway and circulation of North Pacific Intermediate Water
Dec 30, 2003 · [2] North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) is an intriguing class of world ocean's intermediate water masses; its salinity minimum (about 34.0–34.3) layer is well-defined in a narrow depth range of 300–800 m confined to the subtropical gyre of …
EGUsphere - Intraseasonal variability of North Pacific Intermediate ...
Oct 21, 2024 · It was found that the intraseasonal variation of NPIW is mainly caused by mesoscale eddies. Understanding these dynamics is critical for assessing the NPIW's response to climate change and its implications for the global carbon cycle and marine ecosystems.
North Pacific Intermediate Water circulation enhanced by the …
Sep 25, 2015 · We present long records of foraminiferal δ 18 O and δ 13 C from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site U1342 in the Bering Sea, which provide the first evidence of enhanced North Pacific Intermediate Water when the Bering Strait was closed during each of the extreme glacials of the last 1.2 Myr.
Pathways of the North Pacific Intermediate Water identified …
Jan 25, 2013 · This study develops a strategy for tracing a target water mass, and applies it to analyzing the pathway of the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) from the subarctic gyre to the northwestern pa...
Distribution and Formation of North Pacific Intermediate Water
Mar 1, 1993 · The North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW), defined as the main salinity minimum in the subtropical North Pacific, is examined with respect to its overall property distributions. These suggest that NPIW is formed only in the northwestern subtropical gyre; that is, in the mixed water region between the Kuroshio Extension and Oyashio front.
Distribution and Modification of North Pacific Intermediate …
Jun 1, 2009 · In this study, we focus on the modification processes of NPIW in the western-central North Pacific. There are a few studies on the basinwide distribution of NPIW, such as Talley (1993) which presents the distribution and characteristics of NPIW in the North Pacific.
The origin of the North Pacific Intermediate Water
Jan 15, 1997 · Possible source regions of the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) were investigated with synoptic conductivity-temperature-depth surveys. In the Okhotsk Sea Kuril Basin a pycnostad (referred to as the Okhotsk Sea Mode Water (OSMW)) was found in the density range of 26.6–27 σθ.
Influence of northwest Pacific productivity on North Pacific ...
Jan 1, 2004 · According to this mechanism, O 2 consumption would occur near the site of formation of North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW), due to increased respiration of organic carbon in response to a high-productivity event.
North Pacific Intermediate Water ventilation in the Bering Sea over …
We present new long, continuous records of Bering Sea NPIW ventilation over the past 1.2 myrs that offer a new paradigm for North Pacific circulation and climate.
