Via Rail Canada has utilized P42DC locomotives since 2001, when they replaced the LRC locomotives that year. They are currently on services with speeds up to 100 mph (161 km/h), mainly on the Quebec City-Windsor rail corridor.

Following the successful introduction of the P40DC, GE unveiled the P42DC - the next production model in the Genesis series in 1996. It carried the same carbody but featured greater horsepower (4200) and improvements to overall electronics and microprocessor controls.

GENERAL: Amtrak's current primary road unit. Amtrak purchased 207 of these units and are a regular site on most all long-distance as well as many short-distance trains across the country. Some operate in "push-pull" mode with one unit on each end of the train.

Apr 9, 2012 · For our viewing pleasure today, I present my sojourn into the cab of one of Amtrak's P42DC General Electric Genesis locomotives, #100. This engine is one of a hundred purchased by Amtrak and built in 1997, featuring 4,250 hp and weighing 268,000 pounds (134 tons).

Sep 9, 2023 · Both the P40DC and P42DC allowed Amtrak to operate heavy long-distance trains with fewer locomotives compared to the older EMD F40PH locomotives; two P40DCs could do the same work as three F40PHs. The P40DC was succeeded in 1996 by the P42DC.

Acquired by Via Rail in late 2001, the General Electric P42DC (EPA-42a as their designation, often referred to as "Genesis") are used in the Corridor as one of the most common type of locomotive.

Among the locations we'll be touring are the operator's cab, the electrical compartment, the engine compartment, the radiator compartment, and the exterior.
