Punga Hut (Miro Valley Hut) is located in Tararua Forest Park in the region of Manawatū-Whanganui. It has 4 bunks and the category of Backcountry Hut. Building commenced in October, 1958, & completed by Easter, 1959, by Rex Thompson & co.

Punga hut is one of the private hunters’ huts in the Northern Tararua range, that doesn’t appear on any maps. Its location could be regarded as secret, but judging from the number of visitors that sign the book there are lots of people out there who know where to find it these days.

Herepai Hut replaces Putara Hut which burned down in 1977. The hut was built in 1980 by the NZFS with $1,000 of materials supplied by the Bush Tramping Club. A fairly easy 2.5hr walk from the Putara road-end albeit with a grunt from 400m to 770m over an hour or so.
