Some differences between RAIDZ and mirrors, and why we use
Jun 12, 2016 · RAIDZ (including Z2, Z3) is good for storing large sequential files. ZFS will allocate long, contiguous stretches of disk for large blocks of data, compressing them, and storing the parity in an efficient manner. RAIDZ makes very good use of the raw disk space available when you are using it in this fashion.
Why Raidz? | TrueNAS Community
Jan 5, 2024 · RAIDZ is usually less expensive for a given combination of capacity and redundancy than mirrors. That difference can easily run into thousands--or even tens of thousands--of dollars. To dismiss that as "a cheap alternative" is frankly nonsensical.
ZFS RAIDZ stripe width, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying
Jun 19, 2015 · In general, this is a great aspect of the ZFS community, but I’d like to take the opportunity to address one piece of misinformed advice about how many disks to put in each RAID-Z group (terminology: “zpool create tank raidz1 A1 A2 A3 A4 raidz1 B1 B2 B3 B4” has 2 RAIDZ groups or “vdevs”, each of which has 4 disks or is “4-wide”).
RaidZ with 4 Disks | TrueNAS Community
Mar 22, 2014 · I would prefer to have a RAIDZ just to get out out approx. 10.x TB from the 4 Discs. As alternative I would create a RAIDZ2 with approx. to 6.9 TB Obviously FreeNas warns me that a RAIDZ configuration is not ideal in case of 4 Discs.. According to what I understood right now: - RAIDZ with 4 drives is slower than RAIDZ2
Should I RAID-Z1 or RAID-Z2? | TrueNAS Community
Jun 7, 2011 · RAIDZ is a better choice for performance, RAIDZ2 will offer better more redundancy in the case of drive failures. RAIDZ is similar to RAID 3/5 not RAID 0. RAIDZ2 is similar to RAID 6. In FreeBSD, RAIDZ seems to perform better than RAIDZ2 In ZFS a 5 drive RAIDZ performs better than a 5 drive RAIDZ2.

RAIDZ expansion, best method when increasing disks and
Nov 22, 2022 · If you're upgrading the existing you're stuck with a 10-wide raidz2 for ever (or until raidz expansion becomes release, whichever comes first). But, if this is in a 12-bay server ("may add 1 or 2 disks"), you can plug in (up to) two new 10 TB drives, replace existing drives while they are still in the array and then remove the replaced drives ...
What's the stigma behind using RAIDZ1? | TrueNAS Community
Jul 3, 2023 · There is so much information on this topic in this forum, it's crazy. There have been dozens of people who have asked the same types of questions. You can do an internet search for something like "truenas vdev pool mirror raidz" for example and you might find a few things to read. Here is a link that I found useful a while back.
RAIDZ Calculator. Does ZFS ever give write speed gains ... - TrueNAS
Jul 30, 2023 · Hi, I'm trying to calculate my write and read speed gains by changing layouts on the RAIDZ Calculator and no matter what layout I choose write speed is always unchanged. Does it mean that no matter the layout ZFS only provides the maximum speed of a single drive? Assume there are no any cache or special devices and RAM is limited to 32GB.
SOLVED Convert RAIDZ-1 to RAIDZ-2 - TrueNAS
Dec 28, 2014 · Take a current 5 x 4TB RAIDZ-1 vdev and turn it into a 6 x 4TB RAIDZ-2. In order to do this I believe I will need a total of 11 x 4TB drives (which I have). Steps: 1. Have 5 x 4TB RAIDZ-1 vdev. 2. Acquire and install additional 6 x 4TB drives. 3. Add a RAIDZ-2 mirror to existing 5 x 4TB RAIDZ-1 vdev. 4. Wait for zpool to complete the mirroring. 5.
