Shim (magnetism) - Wikipedia
A shim is a device used to adjust the homogeneity of a magnetic field. Shims received their name from the purely mechanical shims used to adjust position and parallelity of the pole faces of an electromagnet.

Nov 14, 2024 · Shim coils are used to improve the homogeneity of the main magnetic field (B 0) to improve image quality as part of magnetic shimming. Shim coils can generate magnetic fields that correct small, local imperfections in B 0 .

Nov 14, 2024 · active shimming uses shim coils, which have electric currents directed through them to generate their own magnetic field canceling the remaining field gradients in the main magnetic field. passive shimming uses ferromagnetic pellets or pieces of sheet metal attached to the MRI scanner bore
shim coils. The procedure involves dynamically altering the room temperature shim coil settings on a per-slice basis. Early attempts at dynamic shimming updated the linear (n=1) shim terms dynamically such that any slice-dependent linear field gradients could be removed (Blamire et al. 1996; Morrell and Spielman 1997).
Magnetic shimming - Questions and Answers in MRI
Shimming is the process by which the main magnetic field (B o) is made more homogenous. Shimming may be passive, active, or both. In passive shimming small pieces of sheet metal or ferromagnetic pellets are affixed at various locations within the scanner bore.
Active magnetic shimming - Questions and Answers in MRI
In the classical shim coil arrangement, one coil is designed to correct each spherical harmonic. Axial coils (typically ring-shaped) correct harmonics in the z-direction (Z, Z2, Z3, etc). Transverse coils (often saddle shaped) correct more complex harmonics (XY, YZ, X2-Y2, ZXY, etc).

A shim coil is designed to create a small magnetic field which will oppose and cancel out an inhomogeneity in the B o magnetic field. Because these variations may exist in a variety of functional forms (linear, parabolic, etc.), shim coils are …
Individual SH shapes are produced by dedicated, current-driven wire patterns – one for each term – and a set of SH coils is combined to form a shim system and to generate shim fields over the subject of interest.

Adjusting the shim. There are different shim coils that can create a variety of opposing field. By passing the appropriate amount of current through each coil a homogeneous magnetic field can be achieved. The optimum shim current settings are found by either maximizing the signal from the field lock or maximizing the size of the FID.
Optimal Design of the Self-shielded Shim Coil Combined with …
Abstract: This research proposes a self-shielded saddle shim coil design technique, based on the magnetic field data of the target field points, to counterbalance the coupling effect of the magnetic shield on the coil in the utilization of atomic sensors. This coil is composed of two nested saddle coils: the main coil and the shielding coil.
