The T-90 is a third-generation Russian main battle tank developed from, and designed to replace the T-72. It uses a 125 mm 2A46 smoothbore main gun, the 1A45T fire-control system, an upgraded engine, and gunner's thermal sight.

For better protection against anti-tank weapons, the T-90 main battle tank embodies passive and active protection features, classic armour and integrated explosive reactive armour ERA kits. The T-90 is fitted with three levels of protection systems.

Mar 30, 2022 · T-90MS is an advanced version of the T-90S tank, which was launched at the Egypt Defence Expo (EDEX)-2021 international arms show in November 2021. T-90MS features a more powerful engine, latest air conditioner, improved electronics and enhanced armour.

Dec 1, 2023 · Several Russian T-90M Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) deployed in Ukraine are now equipped with an advanced anti-drone armor package including Block 1 ERA (Explosive Reactive Armor). This upgrade comes in response to the rising threat posed by loitering munitions, commonly known as "suicide drones."

The T-90 was also remarked for its singular "three-tiered" protection level, comprising composite armour (turret), Kontakt-5 (Mark II) ERA and Shtora-1 countermeasures system with a set of evolved smoke mortars and other refinements.

Jun 1, 2020 · This version of the smoothbore 125mm gun is longer and stronger and uses a more capable and reliable auto-loader. More powerful high-speed armor piercing shells can be used and the barrel lasts longer. The need for an updated T90 became urgent after what happened to T90s sent to Syria.

Kontakt-5 multi-layer armor, Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA), and an TShU-1 Shtora-1 advanced electro-optical countermeasures system provides enhanced survivability against anti-tank weapons, even against those features top-attack mode.

As re-ported previously in ARMOR, the Rus-sians have had thermal sights available for their tanks since at least 1992; and there are reports that the T-90 is fitted with the latest Agava-2 thermal sight.
