
Tuakau - Wikipedia
Tuakau (Māori: Tūākau) is a town in the Waikato region at the foot of the Bombay Hills, [6] formerly part of the Franklin District until 2010, when it became part of Waikato District in the North Island of New Zealand. The town serves to support local farming, and is the residence of many employees of New Zealand Steel at Glenbrook.

Tuakau was established in 1840, close to the banks of the Waikato River. Over 6,000 people living there (6,594 – Census March 2013) – up by more than 500 on the last Census. This higher than average growth rate could see the population almost double by 2031.

Town on the north bank of the Waikato River, 9 km south-east of Pukekohe. Tūākau was originally a trading centre for passing waka, but after war broke out in 1863 it was occupied by British troops. They built the Alexandra Redoubt, which still stands, on a tall bluff above the river.
