May 11, 2024 · Union Pacific's first Diesel switcher arrived in late October 1939 in the form of an Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC) demonstrator model NW2 and began an association between the railroad and the builder that continues today with the delivery of the newest SD60Ms.

The EMD NW2 is a 1,000 hp (750 kW), B-B switcher locomotive manufactured by General Motors Electro-Motive Division of La Grange, Illinois. From February 1939 to December 1949, EMD produced 1,145 NW2s: 1,121 for U.S. and 24 for Canadian railroads.

Jun 26, 2013 · Union Pacific entered World War II with only a handful of NW2 Diesel yard switchers and its fleet of streamlined, Diesel-powered passenger trains, together with a relatively modern fleet of steamers to handle a majority of the freight and passenger duties.

Jan 31, 2020 · UP 1036-1054 were ordered and delivered to UP in lieu of additional EMD NW2 switchers. UP had ordered 25 NW2s in August 1941. On 7 July 1942, after 11 of the 25 units were delivered, the remaining 14 units were canceled by the War Production Board.

Feb 20, 2025 · The NW2 featured a frame with the same length (44 feet, 5 inches) as its predecessors with the taper near the cab for improved visibility. It also came equipped with EMD's standard B-B trucks and lacked a sandbox on the front platform that was commonly found on early SW models.

Feb 21, 2025 · Typical distinguishing features of the NW2 switchers include two stacks in the middle of the hood, a half-height radiator grill on the front, no sand box on the front platform, no small louvers at the front corners, and the tops of the front cab windows are curved to match the curve of the roof.

Electro-Motive NW2 Diesels 1000, Class NW2, was built on October 10, 1939, #889, as General Motors Corp 889. It was sold as UP 1000 in March 1940 and sold as Stockton Terminal & Eastern RR 1000 in August 1966.
