The original 6V6 was an American metal can valve from the mid 1930s, and one of the first valves on an IO base. The valves were capable of push pull use but the normal environment was as a single end output stage.

The 6V6 is a beam-power tetrode vacuum tube. The first of this family of tubes to be introduced was the 6V6G by Ken-Rad Tube & Lamp Corporation in late 1936, [1] with the availability by December of both Ken-Rad and Raytheon 6V6G tubes announced. [2] . It is still in use in audio applications, especially electric guitar amplifiers. [3]

The 6V6 valve is not a very powerful valve. It can produce about 5 Watts per valve of continuous power in ‘Class A’. Without getting too technical, a 6V6 in ‘Class A’ would be a single 6V6 valve (I.e. not a pair of 6V6 valves or a quad of 6V6 valves).
