Apr 7, 2021 · Never use btrfs, it is horrible. If you want to switch to a CoW filesystem which allows snapshotting (which I can recommend) it is a no-brainer: use ZFS. But if you want to use ZFS you should pick a linux distribution with native support for ZFS, otherwise you definitely will get problems with system upgrades.

Aug 8, 2022 · Well actually according Allan Jude back in 2018-2019 it seems like most development is currently on ZFS On Linux much to FreeBSDs dismay. The reason for that dismay is because under Linux, a lot of Linux platform dependent code that isn't easy to transfer are being added to ZFS and that creates a lot of work for FreeBSD.

Aug 12, 2023 · ZFS license was designed specifically to avoid Linux integration. OpenZFS members say, it's legal. GPL advocates say it isn't. Linux kernel devs say it isn't also. Oracle, owner of former ZFS keeps silent. Even they pushes brtfs on Linux instead ZFS. Ubuntu (Canonical) adopts OpenZFS at it's own risk, based on interpretations of their legal team.
