RAID 5E, RAID 5EE, and RAID 6E (with the added E standing for Enhanced) generally refer to variants of RAID 5 or 6 with an integrated hot-spare drive, where the spare drive is an active part of the block rotation scheme. This spreads I/O across all drives, including the spare, thus reducing the load on each drive, increasing performance.

RAID 5EE definition. RAID 5EE is an extension of the RAID 5E configuration. It incorporates the features of RAID 5E, but with better spare drive features. It’s a method of organizing multiple hard drives in a computer to improve data protection and performance.

A RAID 5EE array--also known as a hot space--is similar to a RAID 5 array except that it includes a distributed spare drive and must be built from a minimum of four disk drives. Unlike a hot-spare, a distributed spare is striped evenly across the disk drives with the stored data and parity data, and can’t be shared with other logical disk drives.

RAID levels 2, 3, and 4 are theoretically defined but not used in practice. There are some more complex layouts: RAID 5E/5EE (integrating some spare space) and RAID DP but they are beyond the scope of this reference. Striping is a technique to store data on the disk array.
